Waste Diversion
Reduce plastics and organics entering the waste stream.
One Earth Recovery
One Earth Recovery is a social enterprise in development, working with PHC Gabriola and GIRO to create a local system for plastics recovery, compost generation, and community benefit.
Developed in partnership with PHC Gabriola and GIRO.
The Opportunity
Gabriola Island already has the material base for circular recovery: plastic waste from households and businesses, and food scraps that can be processed into valuable compost.
Reduce plastics and organics entering the waste stream.
Keep recovery activity and value creation on the island.
Support growers, gardens, and circular economic development.
Project Model
One Earth Recovery combines complementary processing streams that keep resources in use and generate local value.
Inspired by the Precious Plastic model, this stream collects, sorts, shreds, and processes reclaimed plastics into remanufactured products.
Food scraps from residents and businesses will be processed using static aerated piles, producing nutrient-rich compost for local growers.
Why This Matters
Reducing waste and supporting lower-impact local systems.
Keeping materials in use and extending their value.
Generating compost for growers and community gardens.
Building practical local infrastructure with long-term benefit.
